In a few months, my husband and I will be empty nesters. This is a bittersweet reality for me. I am excited for all of the amazing experiences that lie ahead for our sons. However, we are close. We have been through more than most together. They have taken care of me when the years after my brain injury were challenging. They are loving and capable young men. I am grateful for that. However, I can't stop thinking about the fact that my relationship with them has been the longest goodbye. As they achieved each milestone of childhood, the goodbye began. As they grew up and became more independent, the goodbye continued. My heart is tender at this final farewell from the security of having them under our wings, close to us. However, the anticipation of what life will bring to them is exciting! It's a natural end to a chapter of our lives. I hope that I can focus on the positive as we march closer and closer to the goodbye as we leave them at college.
